High Risk Pregnancies
Many women are categorized into either high risk or low risk pregnancies.
However, we should be careful not to label a woman simply because she
has a condition that may result in a complication. It's common that once
a pregnant mother is labeled high risk that she is treated differently and
overexposed and over-treated with unnecessary medications, tests and
procedures.
If mother and baby are fine, the pregnancy should be allowed to continue
without unnecessary interventions and without induction or planned
cesareans. Women giving birth to twins, having a VBAC (vaginal birth
after cesarean), diabetic, etc... have just as much of a chance as having a
normal, natural pregnancy and childbirth as a "low-risk" mother if her
provider encourages proper education, nutrition, exercise and doesn't
expose her to medically unnecessary interventions, drugs, tests,
procedures, inductions or cesarean sections.
All to often, pregnant mothers are overexposed to medical treatment and
interventions during pregnancy and childbirth simply because they are
attended by provider who doesn't trust their body or the natural process
of birth. They treat all women labeled "high risk" the same because they
have their own routine way of treating all diabetic mothers, mothers of
multiples, VBAC mothers, hypertensive mothers, etc...
You can change that by seeking out and hiring a birth attendant that is
supportive of natural, normal birth while closely monitoring your condition
when necessary throughout pregnancy and labor. If you arm yourself
with tons of information by doing your own research, taking
out-of-hospital childbirth classes like The Bradley Method and commit
yourself to learning as much as possible while taking good care of yourself
in pregnancy with diet and exercise, you CAN have the birth of your
dreams!
